Nilavarai Well – a natural underground water well

Nilavarai Well – a natural underground water well – thought to be bottomless has many legends Seetha, wife of Rama, while on the return journey to India was overcome with thirst and as there was no water to be found, Rama had gallantly shot an arrow on to the earth creating a well. Some believe this to be the origin of Nilavarai. This is situated at Puttur Rd Jaffna.

Note - Because of the depth, the water appears black. But it is extremely clean (of course people have polluted even this, by putting various things such as plastic bottles, etc). This has supplied water to all the vegetable farms and paddy fields in the area until Tsunami. After Tsunami water has become salty and thus had become unusable for any agricultural purposes.
