Stork Billed Kingfisher




Stork Billed Kingfisher (Pelargopsis capensis) is  the largest  Kingfisher, resident in Sri Lanka.  In Sinhala it is known as මහ පිළීහුඩුවා (Maha Pilihuduwa). The adult has a greenish back, blue wings and tail, and grey head. Its underparts and neck are yellowish. The very large bill and legs are bright red. Both sexes are similar.

They habitats well habitats near lakes, rivers or coasts. It perches quietly whilst seeking food, and is often inconspicuous despite its size. They are territorial birds and hunts fish, frogs, crabs, and rodents. They build the nest in a river bank, decaying tree and nest will consist of two to five eggs.
