Hawaiian Moorhen

Hawaiian Moorhen (Gallinula galeata sandvicensis) is another endangered species. In native language it is called “alae ula” meaning burnt forehead. Its habitats are fresh water wetlands with dense vegetation. The Hawaiian Moorhen has dark grey-brown upper parts, black head and neck, dark slate-blue under parts, with mostly white under tail coverts and white flank stripes. It has a large red frontal shield over a red, yellow-tipped, bill. The long, sturdy legs and long-toed feet are mainly yellowish-green. Sexes are similar. Now it is found only in Kauai and Oahu islands of Hawaiian archipelago.
