Pied Bush Chat






Pied Bush Chat (Saxicola caprata) is another breeding resident of Sri Lanka.  Endemic sub species atratus is found in hills of Sri Lanka and classified as endangered. They can be seen perched on top of short trees or shrubs, looking out for insects mainly from the ground. The male is black except for a white rump, wing patch and lower belly. The iris is dark brown, the bill and legs are black. The female is brown and slightly streaked. In Sinhala they are called ගෝමර ඉසිබිච්චා (Gomara Isibichcha)

The male can be seen singing from prominent places. Breeding season is from February to august. The nest is built in a hole in a wall lined with grass and fibre, and 2-5 eggs can be found in a nest.
